What is epoxy resin E51? Phenalkamine curing agent
E51 epoxy resin is a bisphenol A epoxy resin, belongs to the basic epoxy resin class and is a yellow or colorless viscous liquid of low toxicity. E51 is mainly used for bonding, casting, impregnation, lamination and other fields. E51 can also be used as a raw material to process other epoxy resins. E51 accounts for a large proportion of the application of coatings. Solvent-free or solvent-less coatings made with epoxy resin have strong corrosion resistance and less environmental residue during application. E51 is mainly used as anti-corrosion paint, metal primer and electrical insulation paint.
Popularity of E51:
- Good chemical resistance, especially alkali resistance.
- Paint film has high adhesion, especially to metal.
- E51 has good heat resistance and electrical insulation.
- The paint film has good color retention.
- Fast curing time
Uses:
- Insulation packing for electrical equipment and motors: production of completely sealed insulation packages for high and low voltage electrical equipment such as electromagnets, contactor coils, transformers, transformers dry type, … E51 has grown rapidly in the power industry. E51 has evolved from normal pressure filling and vacuum filling to automatic pressure gelling.
- E51 epoxy resin Widely used to encapsulate and insulate devices with electronic components and circuits. E51 has become an important and indispensable insulating material in the electronics industry.
- Electronic grade epoxy molding compound is used for plastic packaging of semiconductor components. The E51 has grown very rapidly in recent years. Because of the superior features of E51, E51 tends to replace traditional metal, ceramic and glass packaging.
- Epoxy laminated resin is widely used in electronic fields. The development of epoxy copper coated laminate is particularly rapid, and E51 has become one of the basic materials in the electronics industry. In addition, epoxy insulating paints, insulating glues and electrical adhesives are also widely used.
- Engineering plastics and composite materials: epoxy engineering plastics are mainly composed of epoxy molding materials, epoxy laminated resins and epoxy foam resins used for high pressure molding. Epoxy engineering plastics can also be considered as a kind of epoxy composites. Epoxy composites mainly include epoxy glass fiber reinforced resin (composite E51 general) and epoxy structural composites, such as pressed epoxy profiles, hollow rotary products and performance composites. High. Epoxy composite is an important structural and functional material in the chemical industry, aviation, spaceflight, military and other high-tech fields.
- Mainly used civil materials such as anti-corrosion flooring, epoxy grout and concrete products, high-grade pavement and airport runways, quick-repair materials, grout materials to strengthen the foundation foundations, construction adhesives and coatings, etc.

Epoxy resin curing agent E51: Phenalkamine, polyamide, TETA, amine-based curing molecules create strong bonding reaction.
High mechanical properties, E51 epoxy resin has strong bonding and dense molecular structure, so the mechanical properties of E51 are higher than that of thermosetting resins such as phenolic resin and unsaturated polyester.
Strong adhesion. The curing system of epoxy resin contains epoxy group, hydroxyl group, ether bond, amine bond, ester bond and other polar groups with great activity, giving epoxy curing material excellent adhesion to polar surfaces such as metals, ceramics, glass, concrete and wood.
Good processability: epoxy resin basically does not produce low molecular volatiles when curing, so E51 can be molded under low pressure or contact pressure. E51 Epoxy Resin can be used with different curing agents such as phenalkamine, polyadmide, TETA to produce solvent free powder coating, high solids, water based paints and other environmentally friendly coatings.
Excellent electrical insulation: Epoxy resin is one of the best thermosetting resins with medium electrical properties.
Good chemical stability and resistance. Epoxy resin has no impurities such as alkalis and salts and is not easily damaged. As long as E51 is stored properly (closed, free from moisture and high temperature), the shelf life is 1 year. E51 can still be used if E51 passes the test after expiration. Epoxy curing compound has excellent chemical stability. E51’s corrosion resistance to alkalis, acids, salts and other media is better than that of unsaturated polyester resins, phenolic resins and other thermosetting resins. Therefore, epoxy resin is widely used as anti-corrosion primer. Because the cured epoxy resin has a three-dimensional lattice structure and is resistant to oil, E51 is widely used in the inner wall lining of oil tanks, tankers and aircraft.
Difference between E44 and E51
Epoxy value is the most important indicator to determine the properties of epoxy resin, and industrial epoxy resin samples are distinguished according to different epoxy values. The epoxy value refers to the explosive quantity of epoxy-based substances present in each 100g of resin. E51 is a brand, representing medium epoxy (51/100=0.51, epoxy N/100 value 0.18-0.54).
E 44 epoxy resin represents an average epoxy value of 44/100 and (0.41-0.47) epoxy resin with high epoxy value has low viscosity, high viscosity and high brittleness after curing.
- E51 epoxy resin and E44 epoxy resin are bisphenol A epoxy resins. The difference in molecular structure between E44 epoxy resin and E44 epoxy resin is that the molecular weight E44 has a small amount of hydroxyl group in the polymer, which has beneficial to increase bond strength and improve curing rate.
- E51 epoxy resin cured with the same phenalkamines curing agent has high hardness and good chemical resistance, suitable for solvent-free floor coating in electronics industry; E44 epoxy resin is suitable for coatings and adhesives.
Storage and Transport
When storing epoxy resin, please avoid direct sunlight, heat source, flash point and waterproof. Dangerous goods must be stored according to regulations. If not used up after opening, they must be sealed for storage. The shelf life of epoxy resin is usually 1 year and E51 can still be used after re-inspection. Under relative conditions, such as storage at freezing temperatures, some epoxy resins may crystallize, which is only a physical change and does not change their chemical properties. In the case of crystallization, the resin can be reheated at a temperature of 70-80 degrees Celsius and restored to its original state by stirring.
Using
Epoxy resins are rarely used alone, but must be combined with a phenalkamine curing agent. Tertiary amine compounds are used as curing agents, typically making up 5 to 15 percent of the resin. Phenalkamine is used as a curing agent, which is 0.1 to 3 percent of the resin.
